Omni Tanker and UNSW are Leading a Digital Transformation in Composites Manufacturing

Photo by Omni Tanker Kimberly Hoodin October 23, 2023 The University of New South Wales, SOMAC CRC, and Omni Tanker are collaborating to lead a digital transformation in composites manufacturing by creating a digital twin of a pilot production plant. Omni Tanker is in the enviable position of global demand exceeding its production capabilities. As the company expanded into aerospace and hydrogen transport applications, leadership realized that action was required.Omni has a history of working with researchers at the University of South Wales (UNSW). In 2020 the teams successfully developed carbon fiber reinforced polymer specialized chemical transport tanks to replace traditional steel and fiberglass tankers. The tanks feature a seamless interior, are lightweight, and provide exceptional chemical resistance.Working together again with a team from UNSW and researchers from the Sovereign Manufacturing Automation for Composites CRC (SOMAC CRC), Omni Tanker is planning to develop a digital twin of its pilot production plant. By running the digital twin alongside the physical production plant, the team will be able to assess production issues and strategies in composites manufacturing through simulation. Changes can then be made to enhance production processes and improve efficiency, saving time and money.“Our focus is on achieving high efficiency and profitability through automation in our operations, ensuring we remain at the forefront of the composites industry,” said Daniel Rodgers, CEO of Omni Tanker.Dr Shiva Abdoli, Chief Investigator at UNSW, said, “A digital twin of their production facility offers Omni Tanker a test bed for performance analyses and improvement at both operational and strategic levels. The tool will allow them to optimize production through improved process design, layout planning and targeted investment in automation, and further spearhead Omni Tanker’s export activities.”Steve Gower, CEO of SOMAC CRC, summarized the project by saying, “This collaboration between Omni Tanker and UNSW is a milestone project in the composites industry.”
