AI in Manufacturing | Webinar with Olsom – Industry 4.0 / IIoT

Engineer your data for AI, NOW!

I recently had the pleasure of joining Yuri Pilipenko, Founder & CEO at OLSOM, and my good friend Enrique Herrera, Industry 4.0 Independent Consultant, for a great discussion on AI in Manufacturing. Also a big shout out to Anastasiya and Sally who helped make it all happen.

WHY AI IN MANUFACTURING IS IMPORTANT

Let’s provide some context before we dive into the webinar.

Yuri: “AI in manufacturing to me is about a huge opportunity to significantly reduce losses and increase capabilities. On the other hand, being with manufacturing IT for quite a while I fully admit challenges of the data quality that is a key to efficiency of AI implementations. Many manufacturers still underestimate both potential of AI and investment in data of the proper quality.”

Enrique: “AI complements and augments human intelligence in manufacturing, to identify risks and implement improvements at scale. The AI technology can discover interdependencies across functions and disparate data sources that have not previously been possible. These capabilities will change manufacturing forever.”

Bottom line: AI is a tool that can help you improve your results, do more with less, and do it more safely.

The Webinar

We covered a number of related topics including the key goals of most factories, and an overview of the related set of technologies involved, before diving into AI in Manufacturing and the many potential uses.

We talked about diverse uses from automation, to energy management, to predictive maintenance, and improved safety, plus many more! All of these are great examples of how AI can drive improved Manufacturing.

However, like any new technology there are always challenges……. as always the first is usually getting buy-in – how do you persuade senior management that this is needed, how do you get the necessary funding, especially when most Plants are held to very strict budgets!

If you get the funding then what? Well your next hurdle is going to be data. Most people experienced with implementing AI, especially in Manufacturing, will tell you that they spend about 70-80% of their time trying to sort out the data, resolve issues, remove erroneous values, plug the gaps etc.

Yuri talked in more depth on Data Engineering for AI and how Olsom have extensive experience in this field.
